Everything you need to know about homeschooling — and how Koydo helps.
Yes — homeschooling is legal in all 50 states plus Washington D.C. However, each state sets its own requirements: some require virtually nothing (like Texas or Oklahoma), while others have detailed annual reporting, portfolio review, and teacher qualification rules (like Pennsylvania or New York). Koydo's state database covers all 51 jurisdictions with plain-English summaries.
In most states, no. The vast majority of states do not require homeschool parents to hold a teaching certificate or college degree. A handful of states have qualification requirements — notably Pennsylvania (high school diploma required) and some others. Koydo flags whether your state has teacher qualification rules so you know exactly where you stand.
It varies significantly by state. Some states mandate no minimum days (Texas, Oklahoma, New Jersey). Many states require 180 days — mirroring public school calendars. A few states count hours instead (Ohio requires 900 hours). Koydo displays your state's exact requirement and tracks your logged days against that target in real time.
Subject requirements range from none at all to a specific list. Texas requires no specific subjects. New York requires instruction in many defined areas including patriotism, citizenship, and physical education. Most states fall somewhere in between, typically requiring English/language arts, math, science, and social studies. Koydo shows you your state's exact subject mandate.
It depends on your state. Some states (like Iowa and Florida) require annual standardized testing. Others offer it as one option among several — you might choose a standardized test, a portfolio review, or an evaluation by a licensed teacher. And many states require no formal assessment at all. Koydo tells you exactly which assessment options your state accepts.
A Notice of Intent (NOI) is a form you submit to your local school district or state department of education declaring that you're homeschooling. Not all states require one — but for those that do, Koydo shows you the deadline, frequency (one-time vs. annual), and links directly to your state's official form URL when available. The process typically takes 10–15 minutes.
Admissions requirements vary by college. Koydo's transcript generator lays out course titles, credits and GPA; check each college's admissions page for its requirements.
It depends on the state. Many states have passed 'Tim Tebow' style laws that grant homeschooled students the right to participate in public school extracurricular activities and athletics. Others leave it to individual districts. Still others have no policy. Koydo's state pages include notes on sports access laws so you know your child's options.
When you add a learner, you choose your state. Koydo's state pages show what your state asks of families, with linked official sources; check the official source for your situation. On a paid plan, a compliance calendar is created from your school year start date, so your state's filing dates sit in one place. Automatic email and in-app reminders are in development.
Yes. Koydo gives you Family Privacy Controls over every learner profile, does not sell personal data, and keeps ads and third-party ad-tracking out of the learning experience. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Your family documents stay in a private vault, and row-level security protects family records.
Start with a free homeschool setup, then add alerts, recordkeeping, and reporting tools as your family needs more support. The weekly planner stays free, and saving records needs a plan.
