How to start homeschooling in Kentucky

Withdraw from the school your child attends now
If your child is currently enrolled in a public school, tell the school in writing that you are moving to home education. Keep a dated copy for yourself — it is the record that closes out their enrollment.
Send your notice of intent
Kentucky asks families to file a notice before they begin. Cover the subjects the state names
Kentucky names 8 subject areas to teach. How you teach them, in what order, and with which materials is entirely up to you.
Keep a light record as you go
Attendance, a few work samples each term, and a running list of what you covered. Kentucky does not require you to keep records, but a simple folder of work samples makes transcripts and college applications far easier later on.

Sports, dual enrollment and life after high school

Dual enrollment: Kentucky homeschoolers may enroll in dual credit courses at Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) institutions if they meet placement requirements and submit a homeschool transcript showing current grade level. Various KY universities also accept dual enrollment applications from homeschoolers.
Diplomas: No state-issued diploma for homeschoolers. Parents issue diplomas and transcripts. Accredited online programs or correspondence schools can provide recognized diplomas and transcripts useful for college admissions.
College admissions: Kentucky public universities (UK, UofL, WKU, EKU) generally accept homeschool applicants with SAT/ACT scores and a parent-prepared transcript. Some institutions request additional documentation such as course syllabi or portfolio materials.
Support for additional needs: Homeschooled Kentucky students do not retain FAPE rights. Families may request Child Find evaluations from local districts. Some districts provide limited services but there is no state mandate.
